For human beings everything in life is like Saiou's horse.

≒It's impossible to tell whether what happens will bring you good fortune or bad fortune.


≒A joyful evening may follow a sorrowful morning.
人間にとって、人生のすべては、塞翁の馬のようである

≒起ることが、あなたに、幸運をもたらすか不運をもたらすかどうかを言うのは、不可能である。
→悪いことが起きても、それが本当の不幸につながるとは限らない。

Once upon a time there lived in the north of China an old man called Saiou, who was very good at fortunetelling.

To the north from his place, lived foreign people, Hu, and there was a fort at the border between the two countries.

One day, the old man's horse broke loose and ran away towards the northern country Hu.
Horses around this northern area were generally pretty good and sold at a high price. So his neighbours felt sorry and visited him to cheer him up.
However, the old man didn't look disappointed and said,
"You can't say for sure that this won't end up being a good thing."

After a while, the horse came back to the old man with many excellent horses from Hu.
When the neighbours visited the old man for a celebration, the old man shook his head and said,
"You cannot really say that this won't bring me a disaster afterwards."

Before long, the son of the old man fell from one of the horses and broke his leg.
When his neighbours felt sorry and visited the old man to console him, the old said as if nothing had happened,
"You can't really say that this won't end up being a good thing."

A year later, the people of Hu attacked the fort.
All the youngsters around the fort went to the war.
They managed to save the fort from Hu people, but many of them were killed during the war.
However, as the son of the old man had a broken leg, he didn't go to the war.

The son of the old man was still safe after the war.

A year later, /the people of Hu/ attacked the fort.

All the youngsters around the fort/ went to the war.

1年後/胡の人々が/城塞を襲撃しました。

城塞近くの若者はすべてが/戦いに行きました。

彼らは何とかして要塞を守りました/胡人から。/しかし、彼ら(=若者)の多くは殺されました[→死んでしまいました]/その戦争の間に。

しかしながら、/その老人の息子は足を負傷していたので/彼は戦いに行きませんでした。
