Ryuji Miura Advances to Men's Steeplechase Final for the 2nd Straight Olympics
The Japanese Olympian, who also competed at the Tokyo Games in 2021, had the fourth-fastest time in the steeplechase qualifying heats at the Stade de France.
JAPAN Forward/ August 7, 2024/ By Ed Odeven
Ryuji Miura has qualified for his second Olympic final in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The 22-year-old had the fourth-best time in qualifying among 36 runners on Monday, August 5 at the Stade de France, securing a spot in the Paris 2024 16-man final on Wednesday evening (4:43 AM Thursday JST).
Miura was a seventh-place finisher in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase final at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021. He was clocked in 8 minutes, 16.90 seconds at National Stadium.
At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Miura placed sixth with a time of 8:13.70.
On Monday, the native of Shimane Prefecture ran his qualifying heat in 8:12.41 in Saint-Denis, France. It was his fourth-fastest time at this distance in a steeplechase race. His career-best time: 8:09.91 at the Meeting de Paris, a Diamond League athletics meet, in June 2023.
Aiming to Collect an Olympic Steeplechase Medal
Looking ahead to his upcoming race, Miura stated his objective without hesitation.
"I want to give my best performance in the same way that I did in the qualifying round," Miura said, according to NHK.
He added, "I would love to win a medal, and that is what I am aiming for. But all I can do is give it my all."
And what were Miura's thoughts on his qualifying heat?
"To some extent, I thought it would be a qualifying round where I would have to give it my all," he was quoted as saying by the Japanese public broadcaster. "The level was quite high for a qualifier, and the pace was very fast. I had a good feeling and the cheering from the spectators made it fun to [race]."
Japan has never won an Olympic medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Morocco's Mohamed Tindouft had the fastest time (8:10.62) in qualifying. It also was a personal-best time for the 31-year-old, who made his Olympic steeplechase debut in Tokyo and finished 13th in the final.
Kenya's Dominance in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase
Starting in 1984, Kenyan athletes won nine straight Olympic gold medals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali broke that streak at the Tokyo Games. He qualified with the seventh-fastest time (8:17.90) for Wednesday's final.

Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali retains Olympic steeplechase title
Japan Today/ Aug. 8, 2024, PARIS
Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali retained his Olympic 3,000 meters steeplechase title on Wednesday to become just the third Arab to win double gold.
El Bakkali timed 8 minutes, 06.05 seconds for victory with American Kenneth Rooks taking silver in 8:06.41 and Kenya's Abraham Kibiwot claiming bronze (8:06.47).
The 28-year-old El Bakkali arrived in Paris with a target on his back, having won the last three global championships.
After first triumphing at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when he became the first non-Kenyan runner to win the Olympic steeplechase title since 1980, he confirmed his status with back-to-back victories in world championships in Eugene and Budapest.
His second Olympic gold in the French capital leaves him in rare company among Arab athletes to have doubled up at the Summer Games.
Only his Moroccan compatriot Hicham El Guerrouj, who won 1,500 meters and 5,000 gold in Athens 2004, and Tunisian swimmer Oussama Mellouli (1,500m freestyle in Beijing 2008 and 10 km marathon in London 2012) have achieved the feat.

He lost to the spurt of champion El Bakari at the end of the obstacle, but broke the previous Japan record of 8:09.91 by more than 6 seconds and finished in second place.

Triumphant Finish: Ryuji Miura Shines Despite Injury at World AthleticsSport

Ryuji Miura
Japanese record holder Ryuji Miura (23, SUBARU) achieved an impressive
8th place finish, marking his second consecutive medal in global competitions.
In the final, he clocked a time of 8 minutes and 35.90 seconds.
At one point in the last lap, Miura surged to 3rd place, a mere 1.34 seconds
away from becoming the first Japanese athlete to medal in this event.
His powerful performance placed him in clear sight of the podium.
This achievement follows his previous finishes: 7th at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, 6th at the Budapest championship in 2023, and now 8th at the Paris Olympics in 2024, adding up to his fourth global medal in three consecutive years.
As he approached the final 100 meters, Miura saw the dream of becoming
Japan’s first medalist flicker before him.
“Maybe I can reach it,” he thought, bolstered by the vocal support of over
50,000 spectators.
“I want to respond to their support and finish strong,” he stated, showing
determination despite the challenges posed by the multiple layers of tape
wrapping around his right ankle.
The pain had intensified leading up to the event.
After clearing the final barrier, which stood at 91.4 centimeters high, he stumbled, and several competitors surpassed him. Ultimately, he finished in 8th place.
Reflecting on the experience, he noted, “There was a moment when I thought
I could see the medal. That’s why the disappointment is heavy,” he remarked
with a furrowed brow.
Thoughts of his past intertwined with his current challenges. Growing up in Hamada City facing the Sea of Japan, Miura recalled a time in middle school when he fractured his left hand in a bicycle accident.
Despite being in a cast, he won a local athletic competition.
“My arm was swinging well,” he joked, lightening the mood among those worried for him. His strength to face adversity remains unchanged.
Beginning his journey in the 3000-meter steeplechase in high school – a
grueling event requiring the clearing of obstacles 28 times and water pits
seven times – he initially fell to 9th place with 700 meters left.
However, he fought his way back to 3rd place.“I was confident I could absolutely
win a medal,” he expressed, driven by his fighting spirit as he endured
the pain in his right ankle.
Although he fell short, being only 1.34 seconds away from a medal, Miura
remains optimistic about his future.“I want to be greedy and say I can
see the gold medal within reach,” he added, smiling as he lightened the
mood for reporters.
“I think I can continue to grow from this experience.”
While the medal remains elusive, he believes that this journey will strengthen
him further
.Ryuji Miura (born February 11, 2002, in Hamada, Shimane Prefecture), has a notable athletic history, coming from Hamada Higashi Junior High, Kyoto’s Rakunan High, and then to Juntendo University.
He has participated in the Hakone Ekiden for four consecutive years. His personal bests include a time of 3:36.59 in the 1500 meters and 13:26.78 in the 5000 meters. His favorite sushi topping is “engawa,” and he enjoys watching movies in his free time.

Duplantis gives Japanese fans what they came for -- another world record in pole vault

TOKYO (AP) -- Armand "Mondo" Duplantis traded handshakes and hugs with the pole vaulters he'd just beaten to capture his third world championship.
He took a leisurely walk toward the stands to talk to his parents, his brother, his fiancee.
Then, like any great performer in a jam-packed stadium, he turned around, walked back onstage and delivered the encore the people had been waiting for.
It was another world record -- the 14th time he's set it -- by clearing the bar at 6.30 meters.
Duplantis cleared it on his third and final attempt. It came more than a half hour after the racing on Day 3 of the championships was wrapped up for the evening. But nobody in the crowd of 53,000 would dare walk out on Mondo. And Mondo made a point of wringing every drop of drama out of an experience few in that crowd will soon forget.
"To be able to enjoy this world record with them and give them that is super special," Duplantis said. "Especially considering the last time I was in this stadium, we didn't have any spectators. It was spooky and eerie and super weird, and not very fun, honestly."
The night of his last performance at Japan National Stadium was during the COVID Olympics, held a year late in 2021 and without any fans. Duplantis settled for "only" the gold medal that time and missed the world record. The difference, he suspects, was the energy missing during those silent Games.
This time, there was noise and fun -- the people clapping in rhythm every time Duplantis lined up -- and like any great artist Mondo knew how to play to the crowd.
After clearing 6.10, he imitated Japanese baseball Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki's pre-bat sleeve-tugging routine.
"My brother was in the crowd and he plays baseball, so I was trying to fire him up," Duplantis said. "And the Japanese people, if they understood it, it was just something fun."
The Louisiana-born phenom who competes for his mother's native Sweden collected $70,000 for the win -- his 49th straight dating to September 2022 -- along with the $100,000 bonus that goes to record breakers at world championships.
The money isn't the main motivation for a champion who has won every major title -- worlds and Olympics -- since the Tokyo Games.
"It's doing what I know I'm capable of," Duplantis said. "Motivation-wise, it's not that much of a problem. I know the level I can compete at, and I kind of demand that out of myself."
It's hard to blame the crowd for expecting it, too. Duplantis started breaking records on Feb. 8, 2020, and has broken them on three continents and in nine counties. This latest feat puts the height at an even 6.30.
"Six-three sounds really nice, really clean, a new barrier for our sport," he said. "It sounds better than 6.29, for sure."
But maybe not as good as 6.31.
Duplantis has, in fact, wondered if 6.5 might be in his future.
At this rate, it would take another few years. The good news is, he's 25 and, for comparison, the great Sergey Bubka, who won six straight world titles through the 1980s and '90s, was 31 when he broke the record for the 17th and final time.
Bubka's final record was 6.14, and after France's Renaud Lavillenie topped that once Duplantis took over. He has improved the record by one centimeter every time, giving him maximum opportunities to pocket bonuses like the one he'll receive from World Athletics for this one.
"What Mondo has in spades is what every pole vaulter is trying to achieve," said Sam Kendricks, the fourth-place finisher who is the last man not named Duplantis to win a world title (in 2019). "He's got a jump, he's got the jets. He's got a family that really supports him, and then he's got a field of guys that's really pushing him up there."
A Swiss surprise in the hurdles
Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland held off the world record-holder and reigning Olympic champion to win a surprise gold in the 100 hurdles.
After crossing the finish line, Kambundji stared up at the scoreboard waiting to see where her name would wind up. When she saw she was in first, her eyes went wide and she covered her mouth in shock.
Kambundji finished in a personal-best 12.24 seconds to hold off world record-holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria by .05 seconds. American Grace Stark took bronze while Masai Russell, who won gold at the Paris Olympics last summer, was fourth.
"You could see on my face how happy I was when I realized I won," Kambundji said.
Heads up (or down) in steeplechase
The most heartbreaking scene on Monday was steeplechaser Soufiane El Bakkali kneeling with his head on the track and his teammate trying to console him.
The two-time world and Olympic champion was outraced to the line by New Zealand's Geordie Beamish and finished second by .07 seconds.
"Congratulations for a good race today but, for me, I'm coming here for a different reason," El Bakkali said.
Despite his heartbreak, El Bakkali took a traditional steeplechase dip in the water pit with Beamish.
Beamish celebrated a gold medal some 48 hours after another memorable scene. He tripped during qualifying and an oncoming runner stepped on his face. But Beamish got up and made the final.
"It might have been a blessing in disguise," Beamish said. "That gave me a lot of confidence, just being able to get back up off the ground and qualify pretty easily still. It gave me confidence that my shape was better than what I thought it is."
